The PROTECTOR project’s 18 months key achievements between March 1 2005 – September 1, 2006:

  • DEVELOPMENT OF RECYCLING/UPGRADING STRATEGY for organic waste streams from the food industry, incl. food industrial organic waste material and processing characterization.

  • SELECTION OF NINE BEST P MOBIZATION AND BIOCONTROL STRAINS. Pre- tests in vitro, in vivo and plant cultivations in different soil and climatic coditions.

  • PERMIT AND DOSSIER PREPARATION: design of targeted ecotoxicological test strategy for the risk assessment of the materials. Set-up of cooperation programmes with German and Hungarian agro biocontrol substance permitting Authorities.

  • DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE CARBONIZATION PROCESS OF BONE MATERIAL: development of innovative methodology and apparatus for the thermal treatment and specific surface modification of animal bone charcoal. Scale up to industrial performance, pre-engineering design up to 10k t/year/unit output made. Reference field demonstration with production capacity of 500 t/year implemented and in operation in Hungary.

  • DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE ADJUSTABLE AIR SELECTOR innovative technology for bone meal and bone char solid product screening. Scale up to industrial performance implemented.

  • DEVELOPMENT OF SOLID-STATE FERMENTATION AND FORMULATION innovative technology. Solid and liquid fermentation scale up to industrial performance implemented.

  • DEVELOPMENT OF SCIENTIFIC, LEGAL AND ECONOMICAL DATABASE INFORMATION INTRANET.

  • INTERNATIONAL MARKET AND ECONOMICAL EVALUATION for utilization of the end products, with special consideration to the EU25 and the USA. International legal evaluation. Preparation of consumer and retailer acceptance evaluation. Preparation of cost benefit and SWOT analysis at 1000 t/year output production level.

The PROTECTOR project’s 24 months key achievements: until February 28, 2007:

  • DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIMIZATION OF INNOVATIVE SOLID SUBSTRATE FERMENTATION AND FORMULATION (SSFF) TECHNOLOGY:

    • SSFF process modeling, laboratory scale optimization of SSFF process made (<5 kg/batch) and test material was produced.

    • Pilot scale process optimization of SSFF process made (400 kg/batch)

    • Pilot scale “product like” SSFF engineering designed, equipment manufactured and installed.

    • Combined installation of thermal process of solid carrier carbonization and biotechnological process of SSFF is prepared for united mechanical and process control built together.

    • Full scale automated SSFF engineering pre-designed for industrial production.

  • SELECTION OF NINE BEST P MOBIZATION AND BIOCONTROL STRAINS: Two best strains of Trichoderma harzianum fungus and four alternative bacterial best strains have been selected during year two of the project.

The PROTECTOR project’s 24 months key achievements: until February 28, 2008:

    • Manufacturing of ABC carrier and ABC formulated substance: During the past three years 40 sampling protocols made and 1270 kg ABC/ABC-formulated substance samples has been shipped to the partners and used by TERRA for SSFF optimization test and for validation in greenhouse test.

    • Mathematical description of dissolution kinetics of PROTECTOR. Predictions and process level explanations of agronomic effectiveness of PROTECTOR

    • Data sets on reactions and turnover of SOM fractions following PROTECTOR application

    • Data sets on the ability of AMF to transfer P from soil/PROTECTOR to plants.

  • The PROTECTOR project’s final achievements:

  • Development of a family of novel biocontrol products; specifically, all pure solid carriers with high P content which, upon application, result in value-added and quality food production.

  • Development of novel field scale production technology to manufacture biocontrol agents with natural P nutrient performance.

  • Development of novel field application scenarios and best practices which are rooted in agricultural cultivation traditions (no exotic materials and methods used). The prevention, protection and preservation approaches are aimed at environmentally friendly and healthy food production in the low input vegetable sector where the substitution of chemicals and high Cd P fertilizers are key principles.

  • Increasing agricultural productivity and economic growth.

  • Management of extensive dissemination programs is scheduled in seven EU countries and in the USA.

The 3R PROTECTOR solid carrier manufacturing, surface modification and the solid-state fermentation and formulation biotechnology, method and apparatus, are protected by patents and intellectual property rights.
