The
Faculty of Horticulture of the University of Hanover
is responsible for academic teaching and
research regarding all aspects about horticulture for students of
BSC/MSC in horticulture, Diploma in horticulture and regarding
several aspects about BSC/MSC in plant biotechnology and Diploma
in biology. The staff of the Institute of Plant Diseases and Plant Prorection consists of 3 Professors, 5 scientists, 9 technicians and 31 PhD students. The Institute is organized in 5 working groups: 1. Entomology (Prof. Poehling), 2. Plant virology (Prof. Maiss), 3. Epidemiology and general phytopathology (Prof. Hau), 4. Mycorrhiza (Dr. von Alten), 5. Phytobacteriology (Dr. Wydra). The general research approach is directed to biological control of plant parasitic organisms in the context of an integrated and sustainable plant production. The numerous research projects of the institute cannot be named here besides perhaps one example. The Institute is coordinating an interdisciplinary research group on protected cultivation of vegetables in the humid tropics. The group consists of 10 research projects, 5 of those from the Institute of Plant Disease and Plant Protection. Because of the great diversity of vegetables in SE Asia, they concentrate on one model crop, i.e. tomato. In these projects they intend to develop through a holistic research approach an environmentally friendly, and sustainable vegetable production system. Qualifications
of P5 (Uhan) for the project are based on (1) specific skills of
the institute staff for the tasks described, (2) the research
background of the key person, (3) the previous participation of
the institute in EU-funded projects, and (4) the available
material and human resources that can contribute to project
success. Dr. von Alten has a strong research background research regarding mycorrhizal symbioses including ectotrophic, ericoid and specially arbuscular mycorrhiza. Specific experience regarding interactions of AM and plant parasitic organisms, source-sink relations in host plants, inoculum production, quality control, use of AMF in practical plant production, histology, and immuno-histology enable the mycorrhiza working group at the Institute of Plant Disease and Plant Protection to conduct scientific projects in mycorrhizal research thru appropriate approaches.
