The
Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the
University of Rostock is responsible for academic teaching and
research in "Agricultural Ecology"
and "Landscape
Conservation and Environmental Protection".
The staff of the Institute of Soil
Science and plant nutrition consists of 4
professors, 10 scientists, 14 technicians and 9 PhD students.
About 55 % of staff is on temporary positions funded by national
and international research projects. Specific research topics are
the molecular-chemical composition of soil organic matter and
effects on soil health and quality, the agricultural P cycle and
problems of water eutrophication, mycorrhiza formation, life
cycles of mycorrhizal fungi and rhizosphere processes.
The
members of the Institute of Agricultural Economics and
Engineering cover a broad field of economical, social and
technological items in academic education (in Agro-ecology). The
focus of research is directed to policy analysis (Dr. Lutz
Laschewski), environmental protection, technology assessment
(Prof. Hans Kögl) and use of biomass for non-food purposes
(Prof. Fritz Tack). The institute contributes to several projects
on a regional, national and international level.
The
independent Steinbeis association (subcontractor) combines
about 500 Steinbeis-transfer centres (STZ), sub-companies,
transfer-institutes (STI) of the Steinbeis-University Berlin
(SHB) and co-operation partners in more than 40 countries. The
"Steinbeis-Transferzentrum für
Wasserwirtschaft und Bodenschutz" is
an organisation for technology transfer
in soil and water protection. It runs a
modern pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometer (Py-FIMS)
which one of the key methods for investigations of organic
compounds resulting from the PROTECTOR turnover in soil.
Qualifications of
partner P4 (UoR) for the project are based on (1) specific skills
of the institute staff for the tasks described in WP's,
(2) the research background of the key persons, (3) the previous
participation of key persons in, and co-ordination of, EU-funded
projects, and (4) the available material and human resources that
can contribute to project success.
Prof. Peter Leinweber
has a strong research background in soil organic matter chemistry
and chemistry of soil phosphorus turnover. He is carrying out and
leading relevant national and EU research projects for more than
10 years. Specific experience of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory
in soil organic matter research based on various volatilisation
and ionization techniques. These include plant materials, native
soil organic matter, root exudates and microbial metabolites,
organic waste and compost. The combination of long-term
experience in soil organic matter and soil phosphorus research
with most recent analytical tools will guarantee for fundamental
new evidence of organic matter transformations, stabilisation and
ecological functions.
Prof. Hans Kögl has long-term
experiences in applied economic research on the micro and macro
level. In several studies like (only year 2003) (1) EC
Demonstration Project QLK1-CT-2001-01259 "Removal
of spinal column from cattle and sheep carcasses"
(REMCOLM); (2) BMBF project, "MOSAIK:
Semi-open pasture and ley - a research project on keeping the
cultural landscape open"; (3) DBU
project: Interdisciplinary research on coastal zone management";
(4) SARIA-Bio-Industries, "Production
of bio-diesel from animal fats, rape and other seeds and its use
in environmental sensitive areas" the
impact of policies and technological progress on markets, nature
and society was analyzed. He is capable to use powerful
instruments and tools like input-output analysis, econometrics
and optimisation-procedures.
